Medications as ADHD Treatment: How to Deal with Adverse Effects

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder used to be a very hard and complicated learning impairment that students and parents have to deal with. As a learning disorder, students find it really hard performing their academic responsibilities. Furthermore, living a normal college life seems to be impossible for a student with ADHD. But medical breakthroughs and with the help of science, experts have devised various forms of ADHD treatment to effectively improve the symptoms of such disorder. However, medications used in treating ADHD are just like any other form of drugs that have accompanying side effects.

Medications used as ADHD treatment should be handled with extra precaution with the help of medical experts as well as their strict supervision. However, it is also extremely essential to have enough knowledge about these drugs that are used as ADHD treatment. Oftentimes, medications may work differently on different persons particularly on their adverse effects. For example, a particular drug may immediately work effectively on a person but may not deliver the expected effects on another. In this case, parents or students may just have to deal with another form of medication apart from the prescribed one.

The following is a small list of drugs used for ADHD treatment and the adverse effects that can be expected from them:

• Concerta – has longer lasting effects to that of Ritalin. But then, results of tests exposed that Concerta only works by up to 22% from its regular efficacy when taken in the morning. And to deal with this, patients that take such drug as ADHD treatment increase their dosage in mornings and afternoons. If an increased dosage still doesn’t work, patients can still move on to other medications like Focalin XR, Ritalin LA, and Adderall XR as their secondary option.
• Strattera – an individual who takes Strattera will often experience sleepiness even during the day. As such, Strattera can work beneficially at night but is not recommended to be taken in mornings and afternoons. In some cases, Strattera is proven to be longer lasting wherein its effects last from night until morning. And in order to avoid such a thing from happening, it’s best to take the said ADHD treatment at late afternoon or early in the evening.
• Concerta and Adderall XR – are two ADHD medications that are best known for their long lasting effects. There are even some cases that the said medicines work even longer than expected. Thus, Concerta and Adderall XR are not advisable for patients with mild cases of ADHD. Instead, Ritalin LA which is a milder medication than Concerta and Adderall XR is more preferable.
